Gawain

He handed the axe to Arthur, and said,
“My lord, if you believe I’m worthy,
and if my liege lady allows it as well,
then give the green man’s game to me.
If I should live, then let me live in triumph;
if I should die, ordain my death with honor.”
Then Arthur eyed the queen, who gave a somber nod;
and he summoned his nobles to seek their counsel,
and all agreed to give the game to Gawain.
So, with a sigh, the king concedes at last
to let his noble nephew face the knight.
He leans upon the axe, and puts a hand
on Gawain’s shoulder, grasping gently.
“With a heavy heart, I hereby grant my blessing
            to you.
            Your fame will fill these hallways,
            your name resounding true.
            May God go with you always…
            may fortune follow too.”
